S/FTP AWG 26

Construction and cross-section

S/FTP AWG 26 is a Category 7 data cable made as a patch cable: four twisted pairs with stranded copper conductors, each pair in an aluminum foil shield, with a braided shield of tinned copper over all of them and an orange jacket.

Every cable is the answer to a task.

Patch cable: the flexible connection between an outlet or patch panel and a device. The stranded conductors make the cable more flexible than an installation cable with solid conductors.

“Assumed” means: the value does not come from a datasheet but is a usual value or one chosen from a reference.

That leaves the question of what the jacket says.

03Conductor
The name

What the name says.

The designation reads around the slash: before it comes the shield over all pairs, after it the shield of each single pair. “S” is a braided shield, “F” a foil shield, and “TP” stands for twisted pair. So S/FTP means: braid on the outside, foil around every pair.

AWG is the American Wire Gauge and gives the diameter of the conductor: the larger the number, the thinner the conductor. In a designation such as “4x2xAWG 26/7”, 4x2 means four pairs and /7 a stranded conductor of seven wires.

Sources and assumptions

No datasheet was available for this type. The conductor diameter (the nominal size of AWG 26/7) and the diameter over the insulation are estimates; with them the cable comes out at the outer diameter a distributor's catalog lists. The pair colors are taken from the AWG 23 cable, and the braid is assumed.
