S/FTP AWG 23

Construction and cross-section

S/FTP AWG 23 is a Category 7 data cable for fixed installation: four twisted pairs of solid copper conductors, each pair in an aluminum foil shield, with a braided shield of tinned copper over all of them and an orange, halogen-free jacket.

In the model, each pair is a round body with the foil around it. In the real cable the foil hugs the pair and the pairs move closer together. The model therefore measures 8.5 mm; a distributor's catalog lists 7.5 mm for this cable.

That leaves the question of what the jacket says.

04Conductor
The name

What the name says.

The designation reads around the slash: before it comes the shield over all pairs, after it the shield of each single pair. “S” is a braided shield, “F” a foil shield, and “TP” stands for twisted pair. So S/FTP means: braid on the outside, foil around every pair.

AWG is the American Wire Gauge and gives the diameter of the conductor: the larger the number, the thinner the conductor. In a designation such as “4x2xAWG23/1”, 4x2 means four pairs and /1 a solid conductor made of one wire.

Sources and assumptions

Conductor, insulation, foil per pair, braid, jacket material and pair colors follow the Prysmian UC900 AWG23/1 datasheet. The wire diameter of the braid, its number of wires and the lay lengths are assumed.
