PROFINET

Construction and cross-section

A PROFINET cable is a data cable for Industrial Ethernet: four insulated conductors laid up as a star quad, an inner jacket over them, an aluminum foil shield, a braided shield of tinned copper and a green jacket.

inside

  1. Bare copper

    Ø 0.76 mmassumed

AWG 22, stranded, 7 wires (assumed)

  2. Ø over this layer 1.5 mmassumed

  3. 4 conductors

conductor colors white, yellow, blue and orange; white and blue, and yellow and orange, sit opposite each other as pairs (assumed: the usual color sequence)

  4. Aluminum

  5. Tinned copper

    Single wire Ø 0.1 mmassumed

“Assumed” means: the value does not come from a datasheet but is a usual value or one chosen from a reference.

That leaves the question of what the jacket says.

04Conductor
The name

What the name says.

PROFINET stands for “Process Field Network”, an Industrial Ethernet standard used in automation. The name says which network the cable is built for, not how it is built.

The construction is given by a designation such as “2x2xAWG 22”: two pairs of two insulated conductors each, with AWG 22 conductors. AWG is the American Wire Gauge and gives the diameter of the conductor: the larger the number, the thinner the conductor.

Sources and assumptions

No datasheet was available for this type. The dimensions follow an existing 3D model; the outer diameter is the usual one for this kind of cable. Which PROFINET version the model shows is not recorded. All dimensions are therefore marked as assumed.
