RG 214/U

Construction and cross-section

RG 214/U is a thick coaxial cable with a characteristic impedance of 50 ohms and a double shield: a stranded center conductor of seven silver-plated copper wires, a solid polyethylene dielectric, two braided shields of silver-plated copper and a black jacket.

Taken apart, up close, where it is used: pick a picture or a film of RG 214/U. All of them are computed, not photographed, and say nothing about what the cable is approved for.

That leaves the question of what the jacket says.

04Center conductor
The name

What the name says.

“RG” stands for “Radio Guide” and comes from a US military designation system for radio-frequency cables. The number is a serial number: it says nothing about diameter or characteristic impedance. A letter after the number marks a version of the type, and the suffix “/U” marks general use.

“RG 214” and “RG 214/U” name the same cable.

Sources and assumptions

Center conductor, dielectric, the two shields and the outer diameter follow the Belden 8268 datasheet, the halogen-free jacket follows Belden MRG2142. The wire diameter of the braid, its number of wires and its lay length are assumed.
