CAN bus

Construction and cross-section

A CAN bus cable is a bus cable for CAN networks: one twisted pair in white and brown, a foil shield, a braided shield of tinned copper, a nonwoven tape wrap and a violet jacket.

  1. Bare copper

stranded, cross-section 0.5 mm², wires of 0.2 mm each (assumed)

  2. Ø over this layer 1.49 mmassumed

  3. 2 conductors

one white and one brown insulated conductor, twisted together

  4. Tinned copper

    Single wire Ø 0.1 mmassumed

  5. in the reference a gray band between braid and jacket, read as a nonwoven tape

“Assumed” means: the value does not come from a datasheet but is a usual value or one chosen from a reference.

That leaves the question of what the jacket says.

04Conductor
The name

What the name says.

CAN stands for “Controller Area Network”, a bus system that connects electronic control units. The name says which network the cable is built for, not how it is built.

Sources and assumptions

No datasheet was available for this type. The dimensions follow an existing 3D model and are therefore marked as assumed. The lay length of the pair was chosen.
